While the military offers benefits such as health care, housing, and education, it also places restrictions on relationships. Soldiers must maintain a certain distance from their partners and cannot date anyone outside of the service.
But the Army is changing its policies regarding long-distance relationships. In January 2016, the Defense Department announced that beginning July 1, 2016, troops could begin living with their significant others at bases throughout the country.
Now, the Army is taking steps to ensure that soldiers aren’t forced to choose between their careers and their relationships. On May 23, 2016, the Army issued a memo to commanders stating that troops can now request permission to live with their spouses or domestic partners. Commanders will grant approval based on the individual situation.
For example, a soldier stationed in Germany might request permission to stay at his or her spouse’s house in the United States. A soldier stationed in South Korea might request permission to stay with his or her spouse in Japan.
While the Army is making changes to accommodate long-distance couples, it still maintains a ban on marriage. According to Military Times, the Army’s current policy states that “marriage is a personal decision, and therefore, the Army does not recognize marriages performed elsewhere.”
So, while the Army is loosening its stance on long-distance relationships, it remains steadfast against allowing soldiers to wed.
