Charleston is a great place to live. There are lots of gay bars and clubs, and the nightlife scene is thriving. But, there are still places where being openly gay could put you at risk.
As long as you don’t act aggressively towards anyone, there shouldn’t be any problems. In fact, Charleston is one of the safest cities in America.
Being Gay Isn’t Illegal Here
It isn’t illegal to be gay in South Carolina. That said, some people may not understand why you want to come out to them.
If you’re worried about coming out to family or friends, you should talk to them about it. They might be supportive, or they might not. Either way, you’ll know what they think.
You also have the right to refuse service to anyone based on their sexuality. As long as you aren’t discriminating against people because of their race, religion, age, disability, etc., you can legally deny service to anyone.
There Are Places Where Being Out Could Get You Into Trouble
While Charleston is generally a very accepting place, there are still parts of town where being gay could cause trouble. These include areas near the University of South Carolina, downtown, and anywhere along the waterfront.
If you’re concerned about safety, you should avoid walking alone outside of the designated areas listed above.
Gay Friendly Cities List
Charleston, South Carolina is not listed among the top 100 gay friendly cities in the United States. However, there are many things we can do to become more welcoming to our LGBT community.
We need to be aware of the fact that being gay friendly does not mean being politically correct. We should respect everyone’s right to live their life according to their beliefs. But when it comes to public policy, we must remember that discrimination hurts us all.
When we treat others poorly because of who they are, we hurt ourselves. Discrimination against any group is wrong. We cannot afford to allow prejudice to divide us.
Our city needs to be inclusive and accepting of all people, regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, disability or socioeconomic status.
If we truly value diversity, we must work together to create a safe environment where everyone feels welcome.
Why is Charleston so welcoming to gays?
Charleston is a very gay friendly city. The reason is because we’re surrounded by water. Water is a great barrier between us and our enemies. So when we were attacked during the Civil War, we had a natural defense against invaders.
We’ve been invaded many times since then, but we still haven’t lost our sense of humor. We welcome everyone who wants to live here, regardless of sexual orientation.
Top 10 Things To Do While You’re In Charleston
Charleston is a beautiful place to visit. But there’s no reason not to stay longer than just a weekend. Here are some things to do when visiting Charleston.
1) Visit the USS Yorktown at Patriots Point State Park. This was the last American battleship built during World War II. The ship is open to the public and offers tours.
2) Take a tour of the Citadel Museum. Located inside the historic Fort Sumter National Monument, this museum features exhibits on military history, art, architecture, and archaeology.
3) Explore the many museums in downtown Charleston. There are several excellent museums located here including the College of Charleston Art Museum, the South Carolina Aquarium, the Charleston Museum, and the Gibbes Museum of Art.
4) Enjoy a meal at one of the many restaurants in Charleston. Some of the most popular include: Bistro Bis, Charleston Grill, and The French Market.
5) Attend a performance at one of the area’s top theaters, such as the Music Hall Playhouse, the Cabaret Theatre, or the Charleston Symphony Orchestra.
6) Shop at one of the many unique shops in downtown Charleston. Some favorites include: The Battery Shops, the Palmetto Arts Center, and the West Ashley Antiques District.
7) Go kayaking along the Cooper River. Kayaks are available for rent at the Charleston Harbor Marina.
8) Check out the local nightlife scene. Charleston has plenty of bars and clubs where you can dance the night away. Some of the hottest spots include: The Dock Street Cantina, The Corner Pub & Kitchen, and The Green Parrot.
9) See live music at one of the many venues throughout town. Some of the most famous include: The Music Farm, The Dock Street Cantina (formerly known as The Pour House), and The West End Tavern.
10) Spend the day shopping at one of the many outdoor malls in Charleston. Some of my favorite stores include: The Outlet Mall, the Village Shopping Center, and the Northwoods Mall.
11) Have a drink at one of the many breweries in Charleston. My personal favorite is: The Bruery.
