Tucsonans are proud of our reputation as a welcoming community where everyone feels safe and welcome. We’re not a gay city, but we do have some LGBT friendly businesses and events.
We’ve been called a gay town because there are many gay bars and clubs here. But this isn’t true. There are plenty of straight bars and clubs too. And there are no laws against being gay in Arizona.
However, there are several reasons why people believe Tucson is a gay city. The most common reason is that Tucson was founded by Mormons who were fleeing persecution in Utah. This led to the founding of a number of Mormon communities throughout the Southwest including Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles.
Another reason people believe Tucson is a homosexual city is that the University of Arizona is located here. Many students at UA come from out of state and aren’t familiar with Tucson’s history. They assume that Tucson must be a gay city since the university attracts many gays.
But there are actually a lot of misconceptions about Tucson’s sexuality. Some people think that Tucson is a gay city because there are many gay men living here. However, this is only partially true. While there are many gay men in Tucson, there are just as many lesbians.
There are also a lot of misconceptions about the LGBT population in general. Most people think that LGBT people are all flamboyant and feminine. But this couldn’t be further from the truth.
LGBT people come in every shape and size. Some are masculine, others are feminine. Some are tall, others are short. Some are thin, others are heavy. Some are blonde, others are brunette. Some are gay, others are lesbian.
And yes, there are bisexuals too. So when you hear someone say that Tucson is a gay town, don’t automatically assume that they mean that Tucson is full of gay men. Instead, ask them what they meant by “gay.”
