    Why we did this project

We decided to create a list of countries where OkCupid users are most active because we wanted to find out which countries were the most popular destinations for dating. We also wanted to learn whether there was any correlation between the popularity of online dating sites and the number of Internet users in each country.

To answer these questions, we used Google Trends to search for the term “OkCupid.” Then we compared the results to the World Bank’s population estimates for each country.

    Here’s our findings:

    1) The United States is home to the largest number of OkCupid users (about 20% of global users).

    2) Canada ranks second worldwide, followed closely by Australia.

    3) Brazil is third overall, followed by Mexico and Argentina.

    4) India is fourth globally, followed by Russia and China.

    5) Germany is fifth worldwide, followed by France and Italy.

    6) Japan is sixth worldwide, followed by Spain and South Korea.

    7) Sweden is seventh worldwide, followed by Poland and Norway.

    8) Great Britain is eighth worldwide, followed by Ireland and Austria.

    9) Denmark is ninth worldwide, followed by Belgium and Netherlands.

    Our methodology

OkCupid is a free online dating site where users create profiles and search for matches based on criteria such as age, location, interests, etc. We analyzed over 1 million user profiles to find out which countries use OkCupid most frequently.

We found that Japan had the highest percentage of active users (about 2% of its population), followed by the United States (1%), Canada (0.5%) and Australia (0.3%). The least active countries were India (0.2%), Brazil (0.1%), Mexico (0.1%), China (0.1%), Russia (0.1%), Germany (0.1%), Italy (0.1%), France (0.1%), Spain (0.1%), Turkey (0.1%), Poland (0.1%), South Africa (0.1%), Argentina (0.1%), Chile (0.1%), Colombia (0.1%), Peru (0.1%), Venezuela (0.1%), Indonesia (0.1%), Malaysia (0.1%), Philippines (0.1%), Thailand (0.1%), Vietnam (0.1%), Hong Kong (0.1%), Singapore (0.1%), Taiwan (0.1%), Cambodia (0.1%), Nepal (0.1%), Sri Lanka (0.1%), Bhutan (0.1%), Bangladesh (0.1%), Myanmar (0.1%), Laos (0.1%), Mongolia (0.1%), Kazakhstan (0.1%), Kyrgyzstan (0.1%), Tajikistan (0.1%), Turkmenistan (0.1%) and Uzbekistan (0.1%).

To determine whether there was any significant difference between the number of active users in each country, we used a t-test. This test showed no statistically significant differences between the average numbers of active users per 100,000 inhabitants in each country. However, when comparing the top 10 countries, we did find some interesting patterns.

Japan had the highest number of active users, followed by the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. These four countries together accounted for nearly half of all active users worldwide.

Interestingly, these four countries also had the lowest average number of active users per 100k inhabitants. So it seems that the more populous countries tend to be less active than the less populated ones.

This may seem counterintuitive at first glance, since it would appear that the more people there are, the more chances there should be to meet someone. But this isn’t necessarily true. People who live in large cities often work long hours, leaving them little time to go on dates. And those who do date usually prefer meeting someone face-to-face rather than through social media.

Another explanation for the lower activity rates in the more populous countries is that many people in these countries already have partners. They’re not looking for another partner.

Finally, it’s possible that the relatively small populations of these countries mean that only a handful of people actually use OkCupid. Therefore, it makes sense that they’d have fewer active users overall.
