It’s hard to determine the exact number because not every marriage ends in divorce. But according to the statistics provided by the Ministry of Justice, the divorce rate in 2017 was 3 percent. In 2016, the divorce rate was 4.5 percent.
According to the data, the divorce rate among couples living together without being married has increased significantly over the past few years. For example, in 2013, the divorce rate stood at 1.4 percent; in 2014, it rose to 2.2 percent; in 2015, it reached 5.3 percent; and in 2016, it jumped to 6.8 percent.
There are several reasons why marriages break down. Some factors include personal problems such as financial difficulties, health issues, family conflicts, and relationship problems. Other causes may include infidelity, physical abuse, mental illness, addiction, and alcohol abuse.
Divorce Rate Definition
According to Wikipedia, the divorce rate is the number of divorces per 1,000 married couples. The divorce rate is usually expressed as a percentage, where 100% represents no divorces at all.
However, this definition doesn’t take into account the fact that some marriages end in divorce, while others remain intact. So, the actual divorce rate may be lower than the reported figure.
There are several reasons why marriages fail. Some of them include infidelity, abuse, financial problems, substance abuse, mental illness, and personality differences.

• Divorced women outnumber divorced men by 4.5 million.

Why Does This Matter?
Vietnam is a small country with a population of over 90 million people. The divorce rate there is currently at 4%.
That means that every four marriages end in divorce.
If you’re thinking, “Wow, that’s not bad!” Then you need to understand that this statistic doesn’t tell us anything about the quality of marriage in Vietnam.
Instead, we should be asking ourselves, “How does this number compare to the divorce rates in other countries?”
When we compare Vietnam’s divorce rate to those of other countries, we find out that Vietnam’s divorce rate is actually quite high compared to many other nations.
This is because Vietnamese culture places a lot of emphasis on family values. People who break up often feel guilty and ashamed, and they may try to hide their breakup from friends and relatives.
These feelings of shame and guilt lead to a lower divorce rate than would otherwise occur.
Who Is Affected by Divorce Rates?
Divorce rates affect everyone, including children. Children learn from watching parents fight and argue. They may pick up bad habits from seeing their parents act badly toward each other. And they may be affected emotionally when their parents split up.
Children who witness family breakups often feel sad and angry. They may blame themselves for causing the breakup. Or they may try to help their parents work things out.
If you’re thinking about getting divorced, talk to your kids about it. Explain that you need some space right now. Tell them that you’re going through a tough time and that you need to figure out how to deal with this situation. Then ask them to respect your privacy during this time.
Don’t expect your children to understand everything that’s happening. But at least let them know that you’re not happy and that you need some time alone to sort things out.
