Chatroulette
Chatroulette is one of the earliest chat applications. It started in 2007 and was created by Russian entrepreneur Andrey Ternovskiy. He wanted to create a website which allowed anyone to randomly connect with strangers online.
He launched the site on January 1st, 2008. Within a few days, he had received millions of visitors. By July 5th, 2008, Chatroulette attracted 50 million unique visitors per month. In 2009, the number increased to 100 million monthly visits.
On April 2nd, 2010, the site went offline because of a security breach. A hacker gained access to his account and changed the settings. After that incident, the site was shut down permanently.
After the shutdown, the founder moved to London and founded a similar website called Omegle.com. On September 11th, 2011, the company was acquired by Google.
Today, Chatroulette is still available at omegle.com. But now, it’s not just about random video chats anymore. There are also live streaming videos, webcam sessions, and voice calls.
