Why Berlin?
Berlin is the gay capital of Europe because it was the birthplace of modern homosexuality. The city was founded in 1243 by the Teutonic Knights, who were crusaders against paganism. They built a walled town called Berlinka (or Berli) near the River Spree.
When the Teutonic Knights conquered the Slavic tribes living along the river, they renamed the settlement to Berlin, after the German king Frederick Barbarossa.
Today, Berlin is home to over 2 million gays and lesbians, making it the largest gay population center in Germany.
