A study by Dr. David Dunning
Dr. David Dunning conducted a study where he asked participants to rate their own level of competence in various areas. He found that people who were most confident in their abilities tended to be wrong. People who thought they were incompetent rated themselves highly competent.
This phenomenon is called self-enhancement bias. The result was that people who were least competent actually had the highest confidence ratings. This means that we tend to overestimate our skills and underestimate those of others.
