Find out which states have the highest percentage of women
Women represent over half of the population in many parts of the world. And yet, there are still some areas where only men live.
To find these places, we need to use census data. This site allows us to download census data for each state. We can then use those numbers to calculate the percentage of women living in each state.
We can also compare the percentages of women across different regions within a single state. For example, let’s say we’re interested in finding the top 10% of states based on the percentage of women. To do this, we’d select the “Top 10%” option on the dropdown menu.
Then we would enter the number 100 into the box next to “Percentage.” This tells the program to display the top 10% of the states based on the percentage female residents.
When we run our search, we see that New Hampshire leads the pack with a whopping 91.5% of its residents being women. Next comes Vermont (89.6%), Maine (88.9%), Massachusetts (87.4%), Rhode Island (86.8%) and Connecticut (85.7%).
Finally, Alaska (84.0%), Wyoming (83.3%), North Dakota (82.1%), South Dakota (81.2%) and Montana (80.8%) round out the list.
If you’re looking for a place to retire, consider moving to a state with a large proportion of women.
Learn about the gender gap in education
Women make up half of the population, yet only hold 25% of college degrees and 22% of board seats at Fortune 500 companies. The gender gap in education is real, and it’s not going away anytime soon.
But there’s hope. Women are increasingly graduating from college, and women who graduate from college tend to be better educated than men. So we’re seeing progress, albeit slow.
If you’re looking for ways to help close the gender gap in education, here are three ideas:
1) Start a mentoring program for young girls. Mentors teach them life skills, confidence, and leadership. They learn valuable lessons that last a lifetime.
2) Create scholarships for female students. Scholarships pay tuition costs, cover living expenses, and give financial aid.
3) Increase funding for programs that support female entrepreneurs. These include grants, loans, incubators, accelerators, and networks.
These ideas may seem simple, but they work. And they’re free!
